Perfect fit for our family of four

Spent 4 days in this little spot right over the water - was a decompression trip from a busy season at work. First - this place isn't fancy - the furniture is old & worn, but not in a bad way - in a comfy grandma's place kind of way. But extremely comfortable and the location is perfect if you are looking for a quiet, private space. Overlooking the harbor, watching the birds, seals and fishing boats was very relaxing. There are a lot of steps down to the cottage, but easy to navigate and the reason you get the views and privacy. There is a new microwave & drip coffeemaker, no stove, but there is a propane grill on the back porch. Again, nothing fancy but it adds to the comfort of the place and it is clean - everything you need. Wifi is spotty - slow if you can grab it. Cable is limited. Unplug and look out the windows! There are two local stores that have EVERYTHING you would need - one is within walking distance, the other either a bit further to walk, or short drive. Not many restaurants or shopping - but a few if you look around. The parking spot is right along the highway, but if you approach from the north, easy to get in and out with a medium sized car. The little electric fireplace gave a nice glow and plenty of heat - and the shower is great! Although you can't use the "beach" below the house - no big loss - it is very small and the tide covers it part of the day - and the balcony puts you right over the water anyway - with a direct view to the west, for nice sunsets. There are plenty of free beaches/ocean access a short and pretty drive to the north. Also a short drive to Bodega Head for dramatic ocean/cliff views. I loved this little spot and am very likely to return.

Things to do in Bodega Bay

Renowned for its rocky Pacific Ocean scenery, Bodega Bay is also notable a specific kind of birdwatching - that is, for its association with Hitchcock's The Birds. Most of the movie was filmed here, and you can swing by the picturesque Potter School House, a compelling sight whether or not you're a fan. For less spine-tingling entertainment, right on Highway 1 in the heart of town sit a variety of quaint shops selling local wines, art, antiques, gifts, and other goodies.

Outdoor attractions in Bodega Bay

Truly memorable experiences lie in the natural beauty of this coastal town. A walk, or even a horseback ride, on Doran Beach will acquaint you with the bay's roaring shores. On top of Bodega Head, you'll find unbeatable views of the Pacific and perhaps even a family of humpback whales, if your timing is right.

A short 17-minute drive north on Highway 1 takes you to Sonoma Coast State Park. At the northern tip of the park near Jenner, CA, you'll find Goat Rock Beach, home to wild harbor seals where the Russian River empties into the ocean.

Attractions near Bodega Bay

After admiring the coast, it's worth venturing inland to some of Sonoma County's small towns. A scenic drive on the exotically named Bohemian Highway takes you 20 minutes away to Occidental, which offers cute cafes luxurious day spas. Go antiquing at the adorable Duncan Mills on California 116. It might be hard to resist wine country, but you don't have to venture too far east to find visit-worthy wineries. Just take a 30-minute drive to nearby Sebastopol and Forestville. If you wanted a taste of the city, take a day trip to San Francisco, where you'll enter via the famous Golden Gate Bridge.

After a fun-filled day wandering the gorgeous sites of this slice of California, when you return to your Bodega Bay vacation rental or beach house rental, you'll have a wonderfully quiet and private place to relax!
